Mel Amada
I) Mel Almada --> '39 St. Louis Browns
I) Mel Almada --> '39 Brooklyn Dodgers
We'll go with the Browns and see what we can come up with.
I) Mel Almada --> '39 St. Louis Browns --> Bobo Newsom, Johnny Berardino
II) Berardino --> '52 Indians, '52 Pirates
II) Newsom --> '53 Philadelphia Athletics
Bobo Newsom is a Connected player. I was about to completely dismiss him and move on to Berardino, but then I noticed something. The '53 Philadelphia Athletics were not one of my connected teams. The '53 Philadelphia Phillies however, were. Uh-oh. I think I made a boo-boo. Which means I'm going to have to go back and fix a few entries here. That won't be fun.
Until then, I have a chain to complete. I'm taking the least represented team, the Pirates.
II) Berardino --> '52 Pirates --> Ron Kline, Dick Hall
III) Hall --> '71 Orioles
III) Kline --> '70 Braves
Well, I know if I take the Orioles I can use Brooks Robinson, so I'll stop here.
1. Mel Almada played for the 1939 St. Louis Browns with Johnny Berardino.
2. Johnny Berardino played for the 1952 Pittsburgh Pirates with Dick Hall.
3. Dick Hall played for the 1971 Baltimore Orioles with Brooks Robinson.

#263: Hank Greenberg
Hank Greenberg
Hooray! A Hall of Famer! This is only my third randomly generated Hall member.
I) Hank Greenberg --> '47 Pittsburgh Pirate --> Cal McLish
McLish sounded familiar to me. Fortunately, through the miracle of search, I found a half-hearted attempt to use him here. From that post, I get:
II) McLish --> '64 Phillies --> Rick Wise
III) Wise --> '82 Padres --> Tony Gwyn
We'll continue from here.
IV) Gwynn --> 2001 Padres --> Damian Jackson, D'Angelo Jimenez, Phil Nevin, Rickey Henderson, Dave Magadan, Emil Brown, Kevin Jarvis, Adam Eaton, Jay Witasick, Jimmy Osting, Rudy Seanez
V) Brown --> 2005-06 Royals
V) Eaton --> 2006 Rangers, 2008 Phillies
V) Henderson --> '98 Athletics

V) Nevin --> 2006 Rangers
V) Osting --> 2002 Brewers
V) Seanez --> 2004 Royals, 2008 Phillies
V) Witasick --> '96-'98 Athletics
I could have easily stopped at Rickey, but since I saved some time by finding McLish, I went through with it.

William Fischer
I) William Fischer --> '17 Pirates --> Burleigh Grimes
Grimes has showed up in our posts before. However, he always showed up further down in our chains and resulted in dead ends. He shows up much earlier this time, and gives us a reasonable shot for completion. Rather than go through all 3 teams Grimes played with his final year, I'll refer you to this post. I'll just pick up from where I left off, and pick my paths from there.
II) Burleigh Grimes --> '34 Pirates --> Arky Vaughan
III) Vaughan --> '48 Dodgers --> Gil Hodges
IV) Hodges --> '63 Mets
The '63 Mets are a connected team. I'm done.

I have to admit, one year away from Stairs' rookie year, I would have thought there would be more direct links. Both these players played with Stairs the same year, so we'll use previously connected Zane Smith.

II) Manush --> '39 Pirates --> Ken Heintzelman, Bob Elliott

Well, I used my bias towards Hall of Famers and my bias towards the Red Sox. It's only fair I end up with a Red Sox Hall of Famer.
IV) Williams --> '60 Red Sox --> Earl Wilson, Al Worthington, Jim Pagliaroni, Gary Geiger
V) Geiger --> '70 Astros

Elmer Riddle
I) Elmer Riddle --> '49 Pirates --> Murry Dickson, Ed Fitz Gerald, Ted Beard
I'm going to go off on a tangent here for a moment. Whenever I start one of these, I check the player's teams to see if I've connected them before, especially their last year. I was a bit surprised that after all these posts, This will be my first team from 1949. It made me wonder how many other years I'm missing. I decided to check. From 1910 to present, the following years have no representation:
1912, 1916, 1919, 1920, 1921, 1922, 1923, 1925, 1931, 1932, 1935, 1939, 1941, 1943, 1948, 1949, 1955, 1956, 1981
1981 surprises me. I may have to target that one. The rest are from over 50 years ago, so I'm not surprised. Anyway, back to our chain.
II) Beard --> '58 White Sox
II) Dickson --> '59 Kansas City Athletics
II) Fitz Gerald --> '59 Washington Senators
II) Fitz Gerald --> '59 Indians
OK, The '59 Athletics are connected, so I know I can go there. I also have the '57 White Sox connected, so I'm sure I can follow that path as well. I'm going to try Fitz Gerald and see if I can get to Stairs quicker.
II) Fitz Gerald --> '59 Senators --> Jim Kaat
III) Kaat --> '80 Yankees --> Rick Cerone
Easy enough.
1. Elmer Riddle played for the 1949 Pittsburgh Pirates with Ed Fitz Gerald.

3. Jim Kaat played for the 1980 New York Yankees with Rick Cerone.

All these guys played with Gary Carter at some point in their careers. I already have the '87 Mets listed, so I'll ignore Candelaria for now. Of the Expos, I'll give the nod to Al Oliver, for no other reason than he's the only former All-Star of the bunch.
Just an aside, I noticed that Oliver was an MVP candidate in 10 of his 18 seasons. yet, to my knowledge anyway, he never was close to making the Hall of Fame. You'd think anyone with that many MVP votes would at least hang around on the ballot for awhile.

Way to go Bobo! Newsom has been a critical link twice before (John Merritt, Jack Rothrock) and helps me again today. Even more amazing, his third appearance on my Connected Teams table comes with his third different team during a third different decade. That's versatility!
1. Ed Abbaticchio played for the 1910 Pittsburgh Pirates with Max Carey.
2. Max Carey played for the 1929 Brooklyn Robins with Bobo Newsom.
3. Bobo Newsom played for the 1953 Philadelphia Athletics with Bobby Shantz
4. Bobby Shantz played for the 1964 St. Louis Cardinals with Mike Cuellar
5. Mike Cuellar played for the 1976 Baltimore Orioles with Dennis Martinez
6. Dennis Martinez played for the 1992 Montreal Expos with Matt Stairs!

Doves? There was a team called the Doves?
I) Ed Abbaticchio --> '10 Pirates --> Max Carey
II) Carey --> '29 Robins
I) Ed Abbaticchio --> '10 Doves --> Lefty Tyler, Bill Rariden, Rowdy Elliott, Buck Herzog
II) Tyler/Herzog --> '21 Cubs
II) Rariden --> '20 Reds
II) Elliott --> '20 Robins

#65: Ryan Shealy
Ryan Shealy
Shealy played with two teams in his brief career: the Rockies and the Royals.* I'm pretty confident I can connect him through the Rockies, as the 2007 team is on my Connected Teams list. Since he only played 4 seasons, I'll take a quick peak and see if there any names that stand out.
*This is one of those times where I get one of these done, only to have something change. Ryan made his 2010 debut last month with the Red Sox. It doesn't affect my link however.
I) Ryan Shealy --> 2006 Rockies --> Yorvit Torrealba
We've used Torrealba before, in our Zach McClellan chain - an easy 2 degree connect here.
I) Ryan Shealy --> 2006-07 Royals --> Reggie Sanders
Sanders was one of the first connecting players I had, in our Mike Lincoln chain.
Two choices, three teams here. I'll give the nod to Reggie, for old time's sake.
1. Ryan Shealy played for the 2007 Kansas City Royals with Reggie Sanders.
2. Reggie Sanders played for the 2003 Pittsburgh Pirates with Matt Stairs!

#49: Paul Rigdon
Paul Rigdon
Another case of two years, two teams. A quick look at the Indians roster shows he played with Sandy Alomar, but since this is such a recent player, I'm going to look for a possible direct connection.
It's funny, when I did the Alomar chain, I completely forgot that Kenny Lofton briefly played for the Pirates with Stairs. I could have just as easily done this with Alomar:
1. Paul Rigdon played for the 2000 Cleveland Indians with Kenny Lofton.
2. Kenny Lofton played for the 2003 Pittsburgh Pirates with Matt Stairs!
Degrees of Matt Stairs: 2
Another one down!

#25: Tommy Thevenow
Tommy Thevenow
I) Tommy Thevenow --> '38 Pirates --> Ken Heintzelman
II) Heintzelman --> '52 Phillies
So close! The '53 Philles are a Connected Team, so I think I can make my link there. Let's see what else we can find.
II) Heintzelman --> '52 Phillies --> Curt Simmons, Steve Ridzik, Robin Roberts, Smoky Burgess
III) Simmons --> '67 Cubs
III) Simmons --> '67 Angels
III) Burgess --> '67 White Sox
III) Ridzik --> '66 Phillies
III) Roberts --> '66 Astros
III) Roberts --> '66 Cubs
Six potential branches, non of them featuring a Connected Team. However, the '65 Astros, of which Roberts also was on, is on my table. If there were three or four teams to test here, I might forgo the Astros link and see what other connections I can make. Six teams is a lot to go through, and I think this time I'm going to take the easy way out:
1. Tommy Thevenow played for the 1938 Pittsburgh Pirates with Ken Heintzelman.
2. Ken Heintzelman played for the 1952 Philadelphia Phillies with Robin Roberts.
3. Robin Roberts played for the 1965 Houston Astros with Mike Cuellar.
4. Mike Cuellar played for the 1976 Baltimore Orioles with Dennis Martinez.

#10: Frank Chance
Frank Chance
Whoo-Hoo! My first Hall of Fame player!
I) Frank Chance --> '14 Yankees --> Joe Harris, Roger Peckinpaugh
II) Harris --> '28 Pirates
II) Harris --> '28 Robins
II) Peckinpaugh --> '27 White Sox
Joe Harris played with a previous link, Ty Tyson, on that '28 Robins team. I know I can get to Matt Stairs that way, but it won't be within 6 degrees. That leaves me with two branches left.
II) Harris --> '28 Pirates --> Dick Bartell, Rollie Hemsley
III) Bartell --> '46 Giants --> Marv Grissom, Bobby Thomson
IV) Grissom --> '59 Cardinals
IV) Thomson --> '60 Orioles
IV) Thomson --> '60 Red Sox
III) Hemsley --> '47 Phillies --> Curt Simmons
IV) Simmons --> '67 Cubs
IV) Simmons --> '67 Angels
Harris to Hemsley to Simmons seems like my best bet here, although I am intrigued by the possibility of 1960 Orioles team, especially if there's someone who played all the way to 1976 with the team. Let's try that one first:
IV) Thomson --> '60 Orioles --> Brooks Robinson
There we go! Robinson played until 1977, just long enough to play with "Big 3" Denny Martinez...
1. HoF Frank Chance played for the 1914 New York Yankees with Joe Harris.
2. Joe Harris played for the 1928 Pittsburgh Pirates with Dick Bartell.
3. Dick Bartell played for the 1946 New York Giants with Bobby Thomson.
4. Bobby Thomson played for the 1960 Baltimore Orioles with Brooks Robinson.

Mike Lincoln
OK, so here's my first randomly generated player. Fortunately, this is a current player, so he's well within the "Matt Stairs time line". This should be an easy one.
1. Mike Lincoln played on the 2004 St. Louis Cardinals with Reggie Sanders.
2. Reggie Sanders played on the 2003 Pittsburgh Pirates with Matt Stairs!
